Azealia Banks is a name that really hasn’t been coming up too much in the press the last year, so, what has been up to? From dropping occasional singles, to making her acting debut in a film called ‘Love Beats Rhymes’, to even creating a skinscare store, Banks has kept herself busy, and pushing her career behind the scenes almost. The singles mentioned however might be the most noteable, which include the songs ‘Chi Chi’, ‘Escapades’, ‘Movin’ On Up’, and her most recent, ‘Anna Wintour‘, all of which are supposed to be from heavily anticipated followup to her 2012 mixtape, ‘Fantasea’, titled ‘Fantasea II: The Second Wave’. ‘Anna Wintour’ is the official lead single to the mixtape, followed by ‘Treasure Island’, which is supposed to be releasing this year along with the mixtape.
As a pretty big fan of Banks, I’ve been looking forward towards this release. Banks is often overlooked personally, and never recognized for the talent she deserves. I hope that can no longer be the case with this new single however. Banks has been teasing this song for awhile, and it’s exciting to finally see this song released. So, let’s dig in, what has made the internet so obsessed with this new single?
This song was originally supposed to be a remix of Banks’ 2015 single, ‘Ice Princess’ and upon first listen, it is very clear that this is clearly reminiscence on Banks’ first album, ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’. Upon listening I feel it is a very big mix of ‘Ice Princess’ and her biggest hit, ‘212’, which Banks herself confirming they’re related. Although it isn’t as house infused as ‘212’, it has the trap elements of ‘Ice Princess’. Either way, this is a big call back to her older style, one that I’m very excited to hear.
Banks herself has been very supportive of the track, on her Instagram she said: “I wrote this song about finding myself and finding God. Not at all specific to any religion, this song was written to embody the feeling felt when you connect with the universe. Sometime we feel afraid to take chances that will bring us out of our comfort zone’s and it’s always in those moments that God finds you and let’s you know that you are exactly in the right place .. at the right time. ” and after a quick look over the lyrics, I understand and see that quite a bit.
Personally, this is my favorite Banks single in awhile. This is what I’ve been waiting for her to drop for months now. This song holds everything I love about Banks and really wraps her talent up beautifully.
Some highlights from the song would have to be the second verse of the song, giving me some great ‘Yung Rapunxel’ & ‘212’ vibes. I love when Banks gets really intense on the songs, it really reels the listener right in with her mood. Another would have to be her singing. Banks is so talented, and it’s no surprise she shows it off here. I love when she intertwined her singing with her rapping, it leads to a perfect outcome only Banks can achieve.
